PAK vs NZ | Twitter in splits as Glenn Phillips’ fit of rage at self nearly knocks out umpire

No sport played with a huge wooden hammer and a cork leather ball can ever be completely safe, especially when passion comes into play. Glenn Phillips, outraged at himself for missing a scoring opportunity, expressed his frustration in a way that could have ended horribly wrong for the umpire.

Centuries from Will Young and Tom Latham set up a brilliant foundation for New Zeealand in the Champions Trophy opener against Pakistan in Karachi, allowing Glenn Phillips the license to kill in the death as his rapid 34-ball half-century took the team past 300. However, it was not just the opposition bowlers that fell victim to the flailing bat of the Kiwi strongman.

On the penultimate ball of the 46th over, Phillips tried to heave Naseem Shah past the leg side fences but the right-arm quick had taken off just enough pace to deceive the batter and constrain him to a single. The veteran was frustrated with himself for missing a potential boundary scoring opportunity and as he reached the non-striker's end, Phillips swung his bat wildly much like he had hoped to a few moments earlier. However, unlike the previous instance, there was umpire Richard Kettleborough in the vicinity who had to dodge at the last moment to keep his head safe from the wooden willow.

Fortunately, both men saw the funny side of things as they broke out in ecstatic laughter, much like Twitterati.
