Gary Kirsten throws his name into the hat for the Indian women’s team head coach

World Cup winning coach, Gary Kirsten, has sent in his application for the post of head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team according to media reports. Kirsten will join the long list of applicants that also includes the likes of Herschelle Gibbs, Dimitri Mascarenhas and Manoj Prabhakar.

Former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten has sent in his application for the position of head coach of the Indian women’s team. Kirsten, who has played for and coached South Africa and was India’s 2011 World Cup winning coach, joined the long list of applicants and is slated to appear in front of a three-member ad hoc panel which is slated by BCCI.

As per reports in TOI, it was revealed that Kirsten applied after making an enquiry on the vacant post before he submitted his application. The report further said that even Kings XI coach Mike Hesson made an enquiry for the post of women’s head coach.

The South African, who also tutored MS Dhoni-led side to World Cup title in 2011, will now be the key candidate for the post. Other applicants who have applied include Atul Bedade, David Johnson, Rakesh Sharma, Manoj Prabhakar, Owais Shah, Herschelle Gibbs, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Dominic Thornely, Gargi Banerjee, Vidyuth Jaisimha, Ramesh Powar, Colin Siller and Dav Whatmore.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has formulated an ad-hoc panel comprising of former India cricketers Shantha Rangaswamy, Kapil Dev and Anshuman Gaekwad to select a new head coach for the Indian women’s cricket team. BCCI authorities are expected to name the new head coach before the New Zealand tour commences on January 24. The tour will consist of three ODIs and as many T20I’s.
