Emotions often run high during a final with stakes at the highest. Such were the tension levels at Lord’s during the WTC Final that even the ever calm Temba Bavuma was seen going through an emotional roller coaster when Marco Jansen completed a catch after fumbling twice.

Winning the toss and choosing to bowl yielded South Africa great results as Kagiso Rabada sent both Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green packing in the seventh over with just 16 runs on the board. With Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head departing with the scoreboard reading 67, the Proteas were well and truly on the front foot.

However, Steve Smith was still at the crease and ensured that he built a much needed partnership with Beau Webster to take the Aussies into triple digits for the day. The former Australian skipper brought up his 42nd half century, fifth against the Proteas, to signal his intent. On the last ball of the 42nd over though, South Africa got the wicket they craved but it did not come without some drama.

Bavuma decided to throw some part time spin into the mix by handing the ball to Aiden Markram. The offie decided to pitch the ball up in an attempt to get Smith to take a risk. The move worked wonders as Smith attempted to go for an expansive drive but could only manage a thick outside-edge. The ball flew to the left of Jansen, who showed great reflexes to get his left hand to the ball. However, the ball was deflected over to the other side as the lanky pacer stretched out his right hand and again diverted the ball upwards. On the third attempt, he managed to complete the catch and sent Smith packing.

While the wicket was an important one, it was highlighted by the reaction that Bavuma had to the series. The skipper was shown celebrating before stopping as the fumbling continued before he finally ran in to celebrate with his team. Twitter had the same reaction as the destroyer in chief was finally dismissed at Lord’

It is never more difficult to hold onto a cricket ball than when the stakes are high and palms are sweaty from the occasion -- hence the saying 'catches win matches'. South Africa certainly came out believing in it in the WTC Final at Lord's as a slew of exceptional catches had them seize momentum.
